RESEARCH DEPARTMENTS AND LABS
LCV – Laboratory of Visual Culture – Department for Environment Constructions and Design
The LCV integrates research, design knowledge and technical competences from visual communication, interaction design and interior design fields. LCV is a specialized and innovative centre that develops visual communication projects for public and private bodies on a regional, national and international level. Great care is given to Research & Development, carried out in key sectors on competitively acquired projects with large European and national agencies or mandated by organizations and institutions.
DTI – Department of Innovative Technologies
The mission of the Department of Innovative Technologies is to develop undergraduate and continuous education, and to contribute to research and development in information technologies, electronics, mechanics, and in the engineering sectors resulting from a combination of these sciences. In particular, these include telematics and telecommunications, mechatronics, and production systems. The Department is organised according to subject Units, irrespective of whether they are classified as Institutes, Laboratories or scientific Areas. Each subject Unit covers three mandates: undergraduate education, continuous education, and research and development.
From January 2007, the research and development sector will comprise two Institutes (IDSIA and ICIMSI), two scientific Units waiting to be granted Institute status (ISEA and ISIN), a joint USI-SUPSI Laboratory for eLearning (eLab), and the Mathematical and Physical Sciences Unit (SMF).
ICIMSI – Institute of Computer Integrated Manufacturing for Sustainable Innovation
ICIMSI works in the computational sciences and industrial technologies sector. The main subdivisions of this Institute may be summed up as follows: (1) Virtual prototyping and hi-tech materials – with research projects seeking to develop new products using hi-tech materials; (2) Development of design and control instruments for industrial automation – concentrating on the development of software for systems design and control; and (3) Production and logistics systems – running projects in the areas of lean manufacturing, supply chain, enterprise networks, and integrated information systems.
IDSIA – Dalle Molle Institute for Artificial Intelligence
IDSIA is an Institute run in conjunction with USI. It enjoys worldwide reputation for scientific research, which ranges from automatic learning (drawing its inspiration from biology and biological mechanisms) to the optimisation of complex problems. The Institute has also developed simulation models, process-planning models and models in the field of medical diagnostics, namely through ‘Data Mining’ (cataloguing medical examinations of patients).
ISEA – Systems and Applied Electronics Unit
ISEA focuses on those aspects of a product where electronics and informatics are applied in order to meet concrete market needs. Research, driven by the need to create know-how towards a better understanding of how potential products can be used, is conducted by three laboratories: the Microelectronics Laboratory (LMIT), the Mechatronics Systems Laboratory (SMT) and the Telecommunication, Telematics and High Frequency Systems Laboratory (TTHF).
ISIN – Information Systems and Networking Unit
The key research topics of ISIN lie in the area of distributed environments, whether applications or systems. In particular, one of the fundamental lines of research in the next few years will be in
Pervasive Computing and Communications, where the environment and the objects in it interact naturally with each other. Integration between informatics skills and networking skills is one of the strong points of the Unit, which has three laboratories: the Software Engineering and Information Systems Laboratory (ISSI), the Multi-media Technologies Laboratory (LTM), and the Networking Laboratory. While concentrating mainly on teaching the exact and the natural sciences, the Mathematical and Physical Sciences Unit (SMF) also possesses competence in modelling and simulation.
